Noah stared at the figure which was now heading toward his very small kitchen. Wordlessly she put the box down and started unpacking it. In his kitchen. On his countertop.

At least he'd remembered to pin up his shirtsleeve this morning. He looked back at the kitchen. The woman had stopped her unpacking and was watching him now with undisguised interest.  He felt color and heat infuse his cheeks. The last thing he wanted was morbid curiosity about his condition, or worse...pity.

He affected his best scowl. "Did you come to get a look at the cripple?"

Lily saw Noah Laramie blush, saw him struggle, and then heard the harsh words. Noah was a bad-tempered bear with a chip on his shoulder the size of a brick. not that she could blame him. She was a complete stranger and his condition was new.  A smile quivered at the corner of her lips. "Are you trying to scare me away?"

His mouth dropped open for the smallest second, then he put the guard back up again and scowled. "Is it working?"

"No. You need to work on your big bad wolf impression."

wonderful couple

This book is full of intense and emotional moments.
The way Noah struggles with everyday tasks after loosing his arm, and how he feels ashamed not to be able to do simple things like bind his shoes or write is very well done, and draws you into the story from the first sentences. I came to love both hero and heroine. She is very matter of fact, which helps Noah. But she has her own issues of having been left at the altar once.
I love it that he declared his love first, and also that he cries at some point. There are no vilains or side stories, so the couple gets all the time of the book to develop their friendship and love.
However at the end I felt the happy ending was a bit rushed. She has an issue with weddings, but we don't learn how she gets through her own.
There is no sex at all, not even hinted, which creates intimacy between the couple, and I kept left wondering how Noah would cope physically and if he would be convinced he performed perfectly. Also I like the bit after the sex where they cuddle up in bed and just enjoy and maybe talk. Even that is missing. There is also no epilogue, I would have liked to know about children, and also how Noah fares with the prosthesis.

As a favor to her friend Jen, Lily Germaine agreed to drop off groceries for Noah Laramie. As a teacher, she did not have to work in the summertime and had the free time to spare. Upon seeing Noah, she learned that he is recovering from an injury he sustained while he was in the Army.

Noah Laramie did not expect to see Lily Germaine at his door. With the loss of his right arm, he was coming to terms with how much his life has changed. He came to his hometown to recover and work for his brother Andrew at the Lazy L Ranch.

Andrew and Jen arrive, and they announce they are going to be married. They request that Lily be their maid of honor and Noah to be the best man. Both Lily and Noah are reluctant to agree; Noah for the obvious reason in that he doesn't wish to be put on display, Lily because it will bring up painful memories of the past.

Both of them realize they can't let down Andrew and Jen and agree to their request. Lily offers to help Noah prepare for the wedding. He is reluctant to accept her offer of help but knows he will not be able to do it alone.

Lily refuses to allow Noah to feel less of a man because of his disability. Her strong will and determination is the medicine he needs for his darkest hours. Noah's feelings towards Lily intensify, but he fears that she deserves more than he can be able to give her. Will these two kindred souls put their pasts behind them and be able to see the love before their eyes?

HER LONE COWBOY is by far the BEST emotional romance I have found in 2010. There was so many scenes that I reread just so that I could see them without tears in my eyes. Noah Laramie is a true hero; he gave the greatest sacrifice for his country and now he is faced with learning to live with a permanent disability. Lily is just the type of person Noah needs to bring sunshine to his life. Such beloved characters as these two are hard to forget. I feel so rewarded for having discovered Donna Alward's talents; she has earned a lifelong fan.

AN ORIGIONAL STORYLINE

As usual, I couldn't resist the book section at the store. I already have many books at home to read but like to checkout the latest, especially looking for any new books that are out by my favorite authors. If there's a cowboy on the cover or mention of one in the title that always catches my eye as well. To be honest, many of the "Harlequin" and "Steeple Hill" books are basically the same.

HER LONE COWBOY caught my eye because of the cover and the title. As I often do, I started to read the first few pages. They're typically the same, so I often put them back down knowing I have far too many books waiting to be read at home. Not so with this one. This cowboy had lost an arm. Not your typical storyline. And from the few pages I had read, it was well written. I couldn't put it back. I had to know how the author handled such a storyline.

In only a day and a half I had completed HER LONE COWBOY. This was my first read by this author, and I'll be looking for her books in the future. The book was very well written with an original storyline. I also loved how the author kept it clean. Very refreshing. I quickly fell in love with Noah, as well as love Lily's character. Many great lines, and never a dull moment.

Set in Lovecraft's hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, it was first published (in abridged form) in the May and July issues of Weird Tales in 1941; the first complete publication was in Arkham House's Beyond the Wall of Sleep collection (1943). It is included in the Library of America volume of Lovecraft's work. The novel, set in 1918, describes how Charles Dexter Ward becomes obsessed with his distant ancestor, Joseph Curwen, an alleged wizard with unsavory habits. Ward physically resembles Curwen, and attempts to duplicate his ancestor's Qabalistic and alchemical feats. He eventually uses this knowledge to physically resurrect Curwen. Ward's doctor, Marinus Bicknell Willett, investigates Ward's activities and is horrified by what he finds.

About the Author
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. Among his most celebrated tales is "The Call of Cthulhu", canonical to the Cthulhu Mythos. Never able to support himself from earnings as author and editor, Lovecraft saw commercial success increasingly elude him in this latter period, partly because he lacked the confidence and drive to promote himself. He subsisted in progressively straitened circumstances in his last years; an inheritance was completely spent by the time he died at the age of 46.

Lovecraft at his best

Charles Dexter Ward is a young man in Providence, RI who is fascinated by antiquities --- too fascinated, perhaps. He becomes obsessed with an ancestor, an alleged warlock named Joseph Curwen who escaped persecution in Salem over 200 years before and fled to Providence. A unusually long-lived ancestor, I might add.

If you aren't used to reading Lovecraft, or other writers of the same time period, the language and writing style might be a little tough at first, but it is well worth getting into. Lovecraft leaves a lot to the imagination of the reader --- a device that works quite well in this story.

This is one of my favorite novellas --- actually, one of my favorite stories, even. I first read when I was in high school, and I have re-read it every few years ever since. I re-read it again a couple of days ago and I still love it. This is Lovecraft at his best.

Lovecraft's most accessible horror tale

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward has long been one of my favorite books. Charles Ward is an intellectual young recluse steeped in antiquarianism (much as Lovecraft himself was) who discovers horrible secrets about a distant ancestor, one consciously expunged from public records and histories at the end of his ill-begotten life. Ward engulfs himself in a genealogical and historical pursuit of knowledge of this man, a passion all the more emblazoned by each mysterious discovery he makes. This ancestor, Joseph Curwen, was reputably a dabbler in the black arts who fled from Salem in advance of the remarkable witchcraft trials in that town. Finding refuge in Providence, he lived a reclusive, mysterious life, made even more mysterious by his eternally youthful appearance. A recluse by nature, he spent most nights at a farmhouse in Pawtuxet. A continuing series of terrible cries and noises detected from that farmhouse, in conjunction with a number of missing locals and rumors of brutality against Negro slaves surreptitiously brought to that abode culminated in a raid by local citizens determined to put an end to whatever monstrous acts the strange man was committing. No member of that raiding party ever dared discuss what he saw or heard during that awful night. Ward's knowledge of Curwen is greatly advanced when he discovers an old painting of him (revealing a face virtually identical to his own) and a set of personal papers hidden behind that painting. He then launches into terrible studies of the occult at home and abroad, then returns home to put to use the arcane secrets he has learned. His doctor and father eventually grasp the nature of Ward's actions and unite themselves in a determination to block Joseph Curwen's ancient ambitions and plans to once more walk the earth with the aid of his great-great-great grandson. The horrors they encounter in the pursuit of this objective are richly described and deliciously gruesome.
This story is pretty much straight horror with no deeply mythological overtones beyond those of necromancy. Lovecraft does an excellent job of always pushing the action along while providing a rich, deep, historical background of both Curwen and young Charles Ward. The ending chapter contains some of Lovecraft's most terror-inducing, menacingly evil scenes and is not to be missed by those with a gratuitous admiration for the macabre. For those readers who find the Cthulhu Mythos stories too strangely remote and otherworldly, this novella provides a more practical, more individualistic vision of horror sure to affect the reader more viscerally than do mysterious references to the Ancient Ones. Anyone considering reading Lovecraft for the first time would do well to make this book his introduction to the master of horror. This is everything a horror story should be.

A good old fashioned horror story!

Although The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward is one of the few old-fashioned horror books I have read, I found it quite interesting. The plot isn't as far-fetched as so many plots of modern-day horror stories are, but it's still fiction. The horror/action doesn't unfold too early in the story, but when it does you won't stop reading. The descriptions, in the book, of different regions are so clear and imaginable you will be able to draw pictures and design maps. The ending is unique, almost predictable, that's what makes you want to hurry-up and finish the book. Another thing I like about the book is the use of language. I think it goes perfect with the setting even though I had to read some lines over in order to understand them. To write this book in modern-day language would set it apart from other horror stories in that it wouldn't be as good.
