The US Customs Service banned the book as obscene until April 6, 1931, when Judge John M. Woolsey overturned that decision. Woolsey is the same judge who in 1933 would lift the ban on James Joyce's "Ulysses", allowing for its publication and circulation in the United States of America.

It was the first book to note that women's sexual desire coincides with ovulation and the period right before menstruation. The book argued that marriage should be an equal relationship between partners. Although officially scorned in the UK, the book went through 19 editions and sales of almost 750,000 copies by 1931. -- from Wikipedia

Downton Abbey education

After the confrontation between Mrs Hughes and Edna, I went to Amazon.com to see if the book that was pivotal was available anyplace. And it WAS. Right there, ready to be added to my Kindle. I found it to be a very interestingly 'modern' book for it's time, or for any time, actually.
I have learned many odd things from watching Downton Abbey, but this is right up there at the top!

Sneering cynics

Written in 1918 by a woman (Doctor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy and a string of affiliations following her name) it is somewhat dated, but rather shockingly realistic even for today. It is written for a married woman - and her husband. The foreword specifies it even more - "[a] truly monogamic couple, where the man and the woman go chaste to the marriage-bed" - a wishful picture, that the author dispenses quickly in the book. It deals with fundamentals of female and male anatomy, natural female cycles, and, despite a solid pro-marriage and pro-children stance, prevention of pregnancy. Back alley abortions and misguided theologians come in for pointed admonishing. Stopes gives helpful hints from everything ranging from exhaustion to stimulation to natural climax. Given to Mrs Hughes in Downton Abbey to help overcome some of her scruples and mentioned by Antonia Fraser as a go-to guide by her parents. A truly amazing work!

Sexuality as integral element of bonding and mutuality, not just accessory to. Incredible that it was banned in its time. Incredible now that it does not become must reading.

good and funny story also complicated story line. but very entertaining seemed like something was happening all trough the story. not as sexually explicit as the others in the series but a lot of sexual tension. I noticed there was less explicit sections in the books with children involved. for that i aplaud the author

I really love this series. But I do think when authors write a series, the books need to be numbered. As book 1,2,3 etc. as written. It is very frustrating to start the next book to find it is the wrong one.

Unabridged audio of Slaughter House Five

Okay. I love the book itself and revere the other books Vonnegut has written. Also I've listened to at least 100 (maybe 200) unabridged books on tape/CD in the past couple of decades.

But this audio reading is painful to me. The narrator has a soft, stage-whisper voice that he employs throughout; as if he was reading a bedtime story to children. This is a horrible choice on how to do the interpretation of this novel and it just plain doesn't work for me.

The book needs a voice with some gravitas. Vonnegut's books are laced, seasoned, and perfumed with a deep sense of irony and the absurd. Maybe the choice of a soft-spoken, gentle reading of the text is supposed to somehow underline the pathos and horror of the tale; it doesn't work. Not at all.

No reflection on the reader himself; his particular style would fit a dozen other genres . . . just not this one. And he has a pleasant enough voice. But whoever paired him with this novel was/is an idiot; and I really think I'm being objective here, not subjective in my judgements. I sincerely hope that the copywright owners will consider issuing a new audio rendering of this American classic with a different reader at some point in the future. The superior quality of the novel itself precludes me from rating this audio adaptation at one star, so I give it two.

I can easily understand the narration at 1.25x speed.

I disagree with the reviewer that says this book needs someone with more gravitas to narrate. This work is purposefully absurd, dark and humorous at the same time. I am not a big Ethan Hawke fan, but he reads steadily and interprets the absurdity and humor in this book very well. I can easily understand the narration at 1.25 x speed on my iPOD and highly recommend, both for the work itself and the moderately interpretive, relatively interesting and anodine way in which it is read.
