12th vs 13th edition

12th edition is only missing 1 chapter from 13th edition. My teacher taught from lecture so it was not a problem. Good refernece to back up lecture. Alot cheaper than buying 13th edition.

Slight Liberal Bias

As expected the book as a slight, albeit tolerable, liberal bias. The 2011-2012 edition manages to mention Tom Delay's "indictment" and "conviction" at least 10,000 times -- seemingly in every chapter and for no real reason. Hope the newer edition makes clear that he was formally acquitted and his prosecution was a gross miscarriage of justice. The book seems to espouse progressive ideas while explaining conservative ones with respectful pity -- which is, at least, better than disrespectful pity. All in all, a decent introductory text if you can get past these minor annoyances.

Solid alternative to the college book store.

Practicing Texas Politics arrived in good condition and was listed at a fair price in comparison to a college book store.
I recommend this since it is the same book as the college book store and far more cost effective.
While the writing is very good and gives the reader a vast insight into the background of Texas, a star was removed due to the book's overly negative view of the state.

Unconventional heroine in a fun story

I really liked this little book and can't wait to read the next in the series.

The star of the show is clearly our heroine. Megan is a scientist through and through- she relies on cold hard data, doesn't always understand human interactions and has no clue of her own appeal. She's fun, smart and totally unconventional for a romance heroine.

Our hero Gage is pretty boring to be honest. Think your generic playboy rich kid in these novels and you have him. And his name is dumb. My pet peeve with romance novels is that the heroes are rarely actually interesting in their own right. Granted, these are books for women by women (usually) but a good book has strong characters period.

The plot is also pretty much par for the course- Gage (seriously, who names their kid Gage?) wants the VP slot at the family business, so he decides to change his image by dating good girl co-worker scientist Megan. They "pretend" to be engaged all the while falling in love. There are some funny and touching scenes along the way.

The heroine lifted a mediocre and generic story, she really did. She was the most unconventional thing about the book- uncertain without sliding into annoyingly neurotic and smart as a whip. She was totally believable. Another highlight was the b story (or stories), which I assume is set-up for the next book (or books) in the series. We are introduced to her sister and cousin- they are not as original as Megan, but both characters had a truly well-drawn quality that felt real. These women felt like real people, not cookie-cutter heroines.

If you like series romance I HIGHLY recommend this book, and am on the look-out for more from this author!

Not your average harlequin

Meet Megan, she is a young scientist with a genius IQ, a love of chemistry and the unfailing ability to speak her mind. Meet Gage, he's suffering from mommy issues that leave him unwilling to commit to any woman, but with his good looks, a fat pocket book the ladies keep on trying. When Gage is told, by his own father no less, that his philandering ways make him look unprofessional and he most likely isn't going to get the VP job that will be available in 6 months time when the old VP retires Gage makes a plan to get a fiancee, keep her for 6 months and once he gets his new job they will go their separate ways, no harm no foul. If only things worked out so easily.

There is nothing to really dislike about this book, but more than that there is very very little to like about it either. Megan was a fun and quirky character, different than most harlequin heroines in some respects but in others she was the same inexperienced plain-jane that we've seen a million times before, and Gage, well he's just about a clone of all those emotionally retarded men that are so prevalent in romances these days, the only good thing I can say about him is he's nice, respectful and has a conscious about what is going on between him and Megan. But this story just moved so slowly! There were WAY too many scenes taken up with Megan sitting around with Ashley, her sister, and Paige, her cousin, and just talking about boys and none of the three ladies said anything at all interesting or the lease bit insightful about the opposite sex, and their BBFs-4-Life relationship was about as wholesome and interesting as wonder bread. With all those scenes with the girls there are literally zero scenes of what Megan actually does for a living, even though there are more than a few after hours chats she has in the lab with Gage. We just plod along through the requisite plot points, with plod being the key word. We know they are going to break up, Gage is going to have an epiphany that he's in love and willing to commit and then there will be a happily ever after but I just couldn't be bothered to care what happened to these characters. Her writing style just isn't to my taste, it's been a long time since I've been so bored reading a book.

Couldn't put it down. Another story about Pinehurst that drew me in. I enjoyed seeing the main characters work through their own issues to find their love. The side stories were a interesting touch as well. Can't wait to read the stories about Paige and Ashley.

The author does a pretty good job with the book

The author does a pretty good job with the book, however I felt that it could have been better. For being a book in the 'Blaze' series, I had hoped for a lot more steamy tension. This book had promise, but it just didn't deliver for me.

Kate's character was a described as being a fiery spirited woman, but I found her to be a little to immature and mostly unsure of herself. The author had her in scenes that just didn't go along with her personality type. I understand that Kate was trying to come out of her shell a little, but I was hoping for a bit more from her as promised in the book description. Not her trying on a few sexy dresses and bending over at a pool table as the peak of her flirtatious behavior. Also the things that she seemed to get upset about were so insignificant that they felt labored and outlandish. Her upsets were suppose to bring tension between the two characters, but failed terribly.

I have little problem with Mitch, I liked him. He was well practiced in the art of charm.

As far as plot goes, it sort of dragged on and on. I would have liked the author to use several different twists and turns. Basically the whole book was about catching cattle rustlers. I admit, I sure would like to be trapped in a room doing surveillance with Mitch myself, but the sexual tension between the two wasn't heavy enough. I became bored half way through the book.

The ending was just 'okay.' Nothing spectacular. It was a happy ending, and left me feeling semi satisfied, but no wrenching in my heart like a good romance novel should.

The author does use proper grammar and she doesn't over use words like some do. If I were to give constructive criticism, I would tell her to work on her plots more and not to rush sex scenes. In romance, the most important part is to grow sexual tension between the characters, but to do this, realistic conflict is needed. Having Mitch worried about what her brothers would say is reasonable to use as conflict, but it seems to be the only conflict used. We get it, Kate's not a little girl anymore.

The switch between character views is subtle and smooth, and I liked how capital letters in the first few words helped the reader to distinguish this change.

Great end to several stories!

I really liked the story for Kate and Mitch. We first saw them in the September BLAZE collection with an earlier book by Debbi Rawlins. This was a great way to finish up.
You really feel for the characters and it is easy to like sexy Mitch right away. Kate has unexpected news and it tears her apart. Mitch tries to be the good "big brother" type, since he is friends with her brothers. Only problem? He is not feeling brotherly toward Kate and she notices it too.
What I really loved was Mitch and his character and reactions. They were real. Something my own husband or brothers would say. It was nice to have a book that gave me a story that seemed s genuine. Their story is subtle and fantastic. Your going to love it!
