Dear Reader,
In celebration of true love, here's a Valentine's Day treat--the tale of two star-crossed lovers who can't see that they're perfect for each other....
Lady Emma Beaumont and Lord Alasdair Chase were once inseparable childhood friends, then betrothed lovers. But something went dreadfully awry, and Emma left Alasdair practically at the altar.
Now, two years later, Emma has inherited a substantial fortune...but there's one small string attached: until the day she weds, Emma cannot spend a farthing without Alasdair's consent.
The thought of having to go to Alasdair, with his mocking smile and derisive eyes, every time she needs money is not to be borne. Emma swears to Alasdair that she'll have both a husband--and a lover--by St. Valentine's Day.
Alasdair vows she won't--unless he himself becomes both her lover and her husband. In fact, he's looking forward to employing every form of sensual persuasion he dares to convince his passionate, headstrong Emma that she'd rather have him than any other man.
Will he succeed?...or will Emma get her way?
Warmest wishes,
Jane Feather

Amazon.com Review
Lady Emma Beaumont has never taken well to being controlled by men. so When her late brother Ned names Lord Alasdair Chase as the trustee of her fortune until she marries, she is less than thrilled. Not only is Alasdair a deceiving, if charming, rogue, he is also her ex-lover, and the man she has tried her best to forget for the last three years.
Though once her childhood friend and even her fiancé, Alasdair plans to keep his relationship with Emma as formal as possible. After the pain and humiliation of her flight from their wedding years ago, Alasdair doubts he could ever feel deeply for her again. When Emma declares that she will have a husband and a lover by St. Valentine's Day in order to free herself from his control as quickly as possible, Alasdair wishes her the best, and sits back to enjoy the show.
But when Emma sets her sights on the sinister and unknown French émigré Paul Denis, Alasdair cannot contain his disapproval. Determined to win Emma back, or at least keep her from the clutches of Paul Denis, Alasdair turns on the full power of his charms. Unable to deny their long-buried feelings, Emma and Alasdair try to sort through their conflicting suspicions and attractions. Undaunted by Emma's rejection of him, Paul's malicious interests pose a greater threat to Emma and Alasdair than their own insecurities.
While this book's finely detailed setting and liberal scattering of barouches, pelisses, and postilions satisfy the basic requirements for a tasty historical romance, Valentine for Emma lacks the sparkling creativity usually found in Jane Feather's work. The dialogue drags a bit in early scenes, and minor characters such as the snippy aunt and the villainous Paul remain shallow and unengaging. However, Alasdair and Emma are both compelling characters, and their passionate love scenes will certainly keep any reader's attention. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

INFIDELITY NOT DISCUSSED NOTHING
By Lillian Rose
SPOILERS
The H/h had known each other since the h was 8 he was a good friend of the family actually he spent so much time with the family it was like he was a member of their family. He spent most of his growing years with them, yet he had no respect for the h.The H had a mistress when he was young, whom he spent all his money on and he didn't have much money, he nearly went to debtors prison for her, she and the H had a son together. Yet we are supposed to believe that the H loved the h as well. The H was sleeping with his mistress when he took the h to bed, they were engaged and he was still having sex with his mistress. He believed that they were separate, what a crock. What else I thought was a crock was that the H's best friend was the h's brother whom invited the H into his home all that time ago, now when someone told the h that the H had a mistess and a child to that mistress and that he was still her protector/having sex with her, understandably the h dumped him. What I don't understand and what is totally unbelievable is that her brother whom was really close with the h never took this as an insult to her, she took of to Italy and in the book it is said that he/brother never took sides, this is the biggest WTF moment ever, his last thoughts before he dies is of his sister, yet the H totally devastated her and he never called the H out over it or even ended their friendship over this - huge plot device, and unbelievable. The brother left the H as administrator of her fortune.
She remains in the country for three years, the H ruined her for in those times her loss of virginity is a huge thing, yet what does he do he teases her about not having a lover to the extent that he tells him that she is going to have a lover and a husband. He has felt no remorse for what he has done to her, nothing, he is angry at her for jilting him the day before their wedding when she found out about him having a mistress and a child. As I kept reading and waiting for the H to own up and take responsibility for what he had done to the h, nothing the whole way through the book I was waiting. She just jumps straight into having sex with him and it's like old times again, she was so angry with the H. The H even takes her to an old trysting place where he takes his mistresses or ow for sex and she doesn't walk out on him no, she knows what it is, they know him by name. This h has no self respect. This H has no respect for the h. The whole time this is happening I am still waiting for the H to wake up. The whole time the H is angry with the h for jilting him, for not trusting him. Oh yes the whole time the h has been chastely doing nothing in the country the H has been spreading himself around. His mistress married someone else and the H financed their farm and was visiting them. So the mistress gets a new life with a husband and another child with the new husband, whilst the H beds everything in skirts but the h just waits chastely for the H, vomitus anyone, pass around the barf bag. The only thing the H does is take the h with him when he visits the exmistress and his son, no I'm sorry, nothing. He is scum, pond scum, not redeemable, not likeable.
I found this book a very poor effort on behalf of Jane Feather. In the fact that the h was so distraught she jilted the H, her brother didn't defend her honor, the brother named the H as administrator of her money. The h just jumps back into having sex with H, the H constantly disrespects the h, constantly. I can't believe that after all the years the h's family took the H in he disrespected them all by treating the h like that. He constantly blamed the h for his wrong doing and he never once admitted that he was wrong. He slept with the H and the mistress at the same time and never thought this was wrong. He seemed to think that all he had to do is introduce his son and his exmistress to make up for everything, WRONG. He didn't think he was doing the wrong thing by sleeping with them at the same time. I kept waiting and Jane Feather just didn't come up with my HEA. Infideltiy is a hard book to write to get a believable HEA, but when it's not discussed and ownership claimed how can a reader get a believable HEA.

This could have been much better. The premise was interesting, with having the former fiance being the trustee. What ruined the story for me was what Alasdair lied about that caused Emma to leave him at the altar. The novel makes it out that she was irrational for doing so, when what he lied about was inexcusable.
I don't require that the hero and heroine of a romance novel be perfect. In fact I prefer them to have some flaws. However they must be likable. Alasdair was not honorable or redeemable, and the ruined what could have been an interesting story.

Not one of Jane Feather's Best!
By A Customer
Although I generally really like Jane Feather's books this one was somewhat of a disappointment. When Lady Emma's brother dies he leaves her in the care of Lord Alasdair, her former fiance, whom she left at the altar because he betrayed her. I found Alasdair a hero difficult to relate to, I'd have left him at the altar too!
