Mr. President And Gentlemen: In presenting this report of the Visitors to the Medical School of Maine, your committee desire that you be made acquainted with the fact that, unhappily, there are several circumstances which must render their summary of facts not only brief' but incomplete, and not altogether satisfactory. First, it unavoidably happened that your committee were unable to visit the school together; then, it was impossible for either of them to be present at the examinations, or to attend the anniversary exercises; and, finally, each believed the report was to be made by the other. Laboring under these disadvantages, and with this frank confession of our shortcomings, we beg leave to submit our meagre report. The whole number of students during the session of 1889 was seventy seven, a somewhat smaller number than last year; twenty-four of these were candidates for the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Each candidate for graduation, after having passed a thorough examination, which was well sustained, received his degree. We are glad to note, in this connection, a higher standard of requirement and a greater degree of excellence of attainment. It was not until almost on the very verge of the opening of the School that the Faculty were confronted with the untoward circumstance of the illness of Dr. Gerrish, the Professor of Anatomy. How to meet this emergency was a very serious question. Happily, however, they were able to secure the services of that teacher of rare excellence and many years' successful experience, Dr. L. B.
