Book 2 After the Storm: The Founding Years
By Anita Draper
I really liked it when this second book in the series also started on the day of the storm. Renee takes two different characters who live in the town and throws them together alone for the duration. Vivid attention to detail raised the hairs on my arms as I listened to the howling winds, urging it to pass.

Risking her own life, Rebecca Gunderson runs outside when the tornado hits with one thing on her mind--to find her brother, the only family she has left. Instead, she runs into the town blacksmith, Pete Benjamin who won't let her go for fear she'll blow away. They innocently ride out the storm alone in a cellar with nothing more than a comfort hug occurring between them. But when the town gossip hears about it, Rebecca's reputation is in question and Pete feels compelled to offer the protection of marriage. She knows he's still suffering the loss of his first wife and child, how can she live with him knowing he was forced to marry her?

Renee's characters are fresh and familiar. I cried along with Rebecca as she tried to understand and obey God's will. And a few times I wanted to smack the back of Pete's head for being obtuse and not accepting the gift God had blessed him with. It was suspenseful right to the end.

After the Storm: The Founding Years: This series is about a new town in High Plains, Kansas Territory which suffers a tornado strike. Each book has different characters and yet they're interwoven into the High Plains community. Each book is a stand-alone (except for the missing children thread) and yet together they tell a beautiful story of the integrity and stamina of early Americans faced with destruction and having to rely on their own resources.

Book 2 - Feb 10 - Heartland Wedding by Renee Ryan
Book 3 - Mar 10 - Kansas Courtship by Victoria Bylin

Overwrought and Dreary
By booklass
Spoilers Possibly: Trudged my way through this one, and it was a miserable experience. From the first overwrought page to the last, the reader is treated to a heroine that over-reacts to pretty much everything and a hero who selfishly broods. There is little to no action in the story, and the reader meanders along as a witness to each protagonist's stream of consciousness. The sheer redundancy of those thoughts, and most of them pretty dreary, is depressing. There is little to no genuine warmth in the novel, no joy, no redeeming moments. We are told that Rebecca has courage, but we don't clearly SEE it. Rebecca spends a great deal of the novel tensing, trembling, jumping, wobbling, crying and generally being twitchy. One must consider not just the definition of a word when one writes but also the connotation. I feel the author failed to keep this in mind when trying to portray Rebecca as strong but vulnerable, yet using such descriptions.
Pete spends a great deal of the novel pushing Rebecca away and walking away. How disheartening, especially in such number! And, we don't see Rebecca taking much action to make some good out of her situation, say in fixing up the house, until the very end. She spends a great deal of her time in the boardinghouse cooking. Pete is so caught up in his own gloom that he doesn't bother to do anything toward....well, anything, until the very end either. And what was it about the missing children? What was THAT all about? A running theme for the whole series because apparently this is a series? Also, in the picnic chapter, when Bess is screaming and pointing, how could Emmeline NOT see the Indians? The girl has not spoken or made a sound in over a month (and I guess no one bothered to give her a pen and paper)! Wouldn't the sudden action and the pointing finger have caused all of the women to both look at Bess and around for the cause of her screaming? They know they are in Indian territory, they were just reminded. That scene in the story was nonsensical. And searching for missing children at night? Really? I know the author had a great idea for a book, but it was not a well written book. I usually enjoy, and sometimes love, the Love Inspired books. They make me feel good, but not this one.

Great story
By M. Palmer
I have read and loved many of Renee Ryan's books and this one was another excellent work!

This is the second book in a three book series in the LI Historical line: After the Storm. It is a continuing series, so to fully appreciate and understand what's going on, they should be read in order.

A tornado hit the land a month ago (it happens in the first book). The citizens are still trying to recoup from the devastation and aftermath. The twins are still missing, yet some can just not give up hope that they will be found.

During the storm, Rebecca was dragged into the cellar by blacksmith, Pete Benjamin when her life is in great danger. Now the town busybody makes it known that perhaps she lured the poor, vulnerable widower into the cellar and took advantage of his weakened condition...In true Renee Ryan solution, she has them married in a quick ceremony.

Not living back then, I don't quite gasp the concept of why a marriage would make everything right, but it makes for an interesting story to see how they finally become husband and wife. The sexual tension builds throughout the story, leading to a couple passionate kisses. But Pete has a heart full of guilt for his dead wife and just cannot bare the thought of putting his new wife through that sort of torture...

You must read to the end to fully appreciate this book!
