Disappointed

I was hungry to read another Marian Keyes book after I finished Rachel's Holiday and when I saw the description for Watermelon, I was sure this was the one. Sadly it was not to be. The idea of a woman triumphing over the trauma of being pregnant and ditched by her husband especially coupled with a family described as strange but humourous in the last book... well it just sounded like magic waiting to happen. Instead it turned into a very long, whiney, and predictable hellish journey. I know this is "chick lit" so I am ok with predictable but the 3000 diversions in the story, while we hear Claire's thoughts as they drift into every whimsical nook and craney was just TOO much. Truth be told I think the author must have gotten bored with the story and unlikeable main character while writing the book, so she just tried to fill the pages.
I actually sighed in relief at the end. I was just too happy to be getting to the next book.
I give it the two stars because there were pockets of entertainment that made me want to finish the book but boy was I happy when it was finally done.

Total Fun

Like Marian Keyes' other books, "Watermelon," her first, is warm, witty in the extreme, funny, and somehow wise, all at the same time.
The book begins on a horrifying happenstance: Claire has just given birth to a beautiful, healthy daughter, and as she lies basking in the afterglow, her slime of a husband, James, enters her hospital room to tell her that: 1) he is in love with another woman; and that 2) he is therefore leaving Claire. Just like that. No muss, no fuss. With a beginning like that, it's hard to imagine where to go from here, but Keyes manages to pick Claire up by the scruff of her neck, shake her off, and move her and her newborn back to Dublin from London, where she had been living with James.
Once in Dublin, Claire runs the gamut of emotions, from not showering for a week to crying nonstop for 24 hours to yelling and screaming to becoming the "antichrist" to her large, extended and very strange family. Yet we love her more on every page. And we want so much for Claire to "sort herself out," as the Brits say.
Will Claire sort herself out? Will James come back and grovel? If he does, will Claire take him back? Will her parents ever break free of their strange and abominable daughters? It's all answered in the book, in prose that is so completely fresh and witty, so very funny, that the reader almost forgets that there is actually a real story here, and a good one at that.
It's nice to know that Keyes only got better with time, because this, her first novel, is just about perfect, and I'm glad to know that it wasn't a flash in the pan!

ENTERTAINING,BUT NOT WHAT I THOUGHT

I was "wowed" when I read the editorial reviews. I am a lover of all things Irish. Therefore, I thought this book would delve into the stereotypical Irish lifestyle. You know, "Quiet Man" and such. Not so, this could have taken place in New York anywhere. Don't get me wrong, It was a very cute Romance, and the author's style is very funny. I just thought that they would talk in funny accents and stuff. I apologize for wanting this, but hey, I'm writing anonomously. So those of you out there who love the Irish and Scottish romances, be forwarned. She doesn't have a nice "cottage", there are no "running brooks" or "funny priests". Gosh, I feel like an idiot, but when I read, I would like to totally escape. I felt as though this book just took me next door. I think the author needs to be a little more descriptive. I can't even remember what her mother's house looks like, or any of the other places in the book. Of course, this book started as a best-seller in Europe, so I guess they can do without stereotypes or descriptions, since they live there. All in all, amusing from an emotional aspect, but definitely not what I was expecting. I think I'll go back to my historical romances written by American authors. They are much more escapist and romantic. I hate to be an idiot, thank goodness for the anonymous button.
