mistakes in Kindle copy

The Kindle version I recently bought has a problem. At the end of each chapter, instead of listing all the text references on one
page, each reference has it's own individual page. This makes it impossible to continue reading as you would in the actual book.

Downloading all messed up

When I opened the book it "jumped" to 1 item per page...it never went to Genesis and flowed on from there. When I tapped for the next page it would say John 1:24 (for example) I was lost....I don't like it at all and will NEVER try to read it again unless someone can tell me what is going on. I thought it would be in book format...but, NOT!

Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English writer of adventure novels set predominantly in Africa, and a founder of the Lost World literary genre. King Solomon's Mines

The kindle makes it enticingly economical to explore the nooks and crannies of the classic fiction that one would never go to if it meant shelling out twelve bucks a copy to Penguin or some other reprinter of public domain works. Prompted by David Gann's tale about the life and death of British explorer, Percy Fawcett, The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon (Vintage Departures), I picked up the complete works of H. Rider Haggard. The first in an enormous number of novels you get for a ridiculously low price is Kings Solomon's Mines.

King Solomon's Mines was published in 1885 and advertised as "the most amazing book ever written." When I read it in 2010, it was hardly that. In fact, as I read I felt that I had seen the movie several hundred times. The pleasure came from reading the original--if there is such a thing as an original--that spawned a thousand imitators. I have seen the elements of King Solomon's Mines replicated in print, splayed across the big screen and elaborated to incredible proportions in video games. It would seem hard for this modest little adventure to be able to hold the weight of all it spawned, but reading it over a hundred years after it's publication, it manages to do fairly well.

The story is told by the iconic, Alan Quatermain, a fifty-something year-old elephant hunter who is on the down side of his career. He hooks up with two other Englishmen, Sir Henry and Mr. Goode, as well as a Zulu servant, to go in search of Sir Henry's brother and the lost treasure of King Solomon's mines.

The adventures are standard stuff for any modern reader who has ever watched an Indiana Jones movie or played Prince of Persia on a video system. Our heroes nearly die of heat and thirst in the desert. They nearly die of cold and hunger in the mountains. They awe the natives with their magic noise tubes that can kill at a distance. They consolidate power in a tribal civil war by using an almanac to predict an eclipse. And after ridding the natives of an evil king and putting in his place a king who will impose English justice on the tribe, they head to the mountains in search of diamonds. Our three sturdy adventurers, quite naturally, become imprisoned in the treasure-laden caverns of the mines, where secret doors open and close by means of hidden panels and ancient engineering.

I won't give away the end, but if you can't figure it out in a general sense you have never seen an adventure movie.

The book still holds up after a hundred years. It is fun. The three stiff-upper-lip Englishmen, although stereotypes now, have enough individuality and humor about them to make following their adventures a joy. Allan Quatermain, who is a bit of a coward and a quite a mercenary, is a good narrator for the tale. He is interesting, flawed and likable.

To my modern sensibilities, the glee with which the three hunters killed elephants for the tusks was a little hard to stomach, and the portrayal of native culture in Africa was anything but enlightened. But I could accept the fact that it was written in a different era. Those whose concerns about such things are carried closer to the heart might want to skip the book.

I doubt I will read the long list of novels written by Haggard. I suspect that they will be iterations of the same literary motifs so that once I have read a few, I will have read them all. The English adventurer, whether in real life or in fiction, is a character that the world will never see again. Allan Quatermain is one of the originals in fiction, and still worth reading today.

An excellent collection. I had read She and Return of She, many years ago, along with some of the Quartermain work. Very enjoyable on the main. And certainly not built on today's weak writing quality. I would recommend these works to mid-teens and up as they combine action with excellent plot development, engaging dialogue, and great style.

Great Adventure Books and a Great Bargain Edirion

I've read several of the books in this collection recently -- Morning Star, King Solomon's Mines, and Quartermain. I have found these to be wonderful, with a very strong narrative interest and with a ranger of emotion that surprised me. If you enjoy adventure novels, I think you'll enjoy Haggard's works very much. And this edition strikes me as one of the best bargains around.

Morning Star, filled with intrigue, is set in ancient Egypt and is wonderfully evocative and atmospheric.

King Solomon's Mines is probably the adventure novel par excellence. Quartermain and his companions strike out to solve the mystery of stories about untold wealth (jewels and gold) hidden away in unexplored and dangerous part of Africa.

Quartermain takes place after he returns to England with his share of King Solomon's Mines, remains there for a few years, finds himself utterly bored and longing for his old life as an explorer, and returns to Africa with several friends to strike out on a search for a rumored civilization of white Africans living in an unexplored area of the dark continent.

Beneath his English disposition, it is very clear that Haggard had a high regard for Black Africans, a regard that probably wasn't typical towards "savages" in the England of his day.

Russian alpha, a marriage of convenience and a baby

Again Lynne Graham writes a powerful, charged and roller coaster romance with Ruthless Magnate, Convenient Wife.

Sergei is one arrogant and demanding man. He was married once before and it didn't last and he mistrusts women. He decides to have his people interview marriage candidates and Alexa is chosen. However, she's in-love and pregnant with another man's baby so she takes the money and pays off her mother's debut but in order to do so, her sweet twin Alissa must now step in to fulfil the contract. However, she's not aware of what the contract entails, especially about the intimacy and the child she will need to conceive and then give up.

Sergei is powerfully attracted to Alissa and she appeals to him like no other woman and it frustrates him. He's puzzled that she seems different from his reports but he can't seem to keep his eyes off of her. This arrogant Russian is demanding, he flaunts himself at other women and he's also very handsome and straight forward. What Alissa likes about him is his honestly, his directness, how he adores his grandmother and for all his wealth and power he doesn't take advantage. He's polite, courteous and made her feel very feminie.

This Russian alphas father was in and out of prison, his mother a drunk, his childhood was dark and troubled ending with the death of both parents when he as a young teen. So he went to live with his grandmother, the woman he adored. The same woman he wanted to please by marrying again and giving her a grandchild.

Sergei couldn't stop wanting her. He loved her eyes, her freshness, her lush curves and she seemed so different from her profile. She was nothing like her picture, she was sensitive and that didn't add up. And then on their wedding night he finds more surprises, she's a virgin and he didn't use protection. Even though he knows with the contract says, he wants to take things slowly and enjoy her a little longer. Then everything comes crashing down when he finds out about the sisters fraud.....Alexa signing the contract and taking the money and Alissa actually marrying him!

Just when you think there might be a chance for Alissa and Sergei, Alissa comes clean and tells him everything Alexa has done. He's furious and decides there are only two ways to proceed, he prosecutes the sisters or he keeps her where he wants her, in his bed! The other stipulation they stay married for a year so as not to hurt his grandmother. And then the unexpected a three week honeymoon on a yacht, a surprise visit in Turkey to see her sister and the most unexpected and alarming realization that's she's pregnant.

Ruthless Magnate, Convenient Wife had a very charming and happy ending especially for Sergei when he realizes from their first meeting, then seeing the "bad" twin in action, and spending time with his wife how he can never let her go and that he loves her. It's a lovely ending for the two of them because they deserve happiness and a family.

I loved this story because it was an easy read and not very complicated. Sergei needed a bride & heir to please his grandmother who raised him. Since his first marriage was so terrible he decided to arrange it like a business transaction. He gets his lawyers to find the perfect candidate, and he'll meet her at the wedding. Alexa applies for the job and gets chosen but Sergei does not find her attractive, so he wants to meet her right away. Alexa meets someone and gets pregnant, so she can't take the job but talks her twin sister into taking it. When Sergei and Alissa meet sparks start flying and the jaded Sergei flips. He can't understand why the picture of his future bride does not show her for the beauty she really is in person. The story is awesome because Sergei goes all out to win Alissa at all cost and his grandmother loves her. I don't want to tell you too much of the story, but I recommend it highly.

Love Sergei and Allissa love the concept but Allissa's sister what an a#$hole sorry for that term but when you read the book you will detest her sister as well money does things to people. Any way I enjoyed my read I still love Lynne Grahman of course you know her men are a little overbearing.

The Filmmaker's Bible of Aesthetics or What Works and Why

This is probably the most important textbook a film production student can have on his/her shelf. NOT for how to work with actors or how to light a scene, but for understanding the underlying reasons of why things work due to our learned aesthetics and Western sensibilities.
Professor Herbert Zettl has written the most concise manual on why we has film viewers percieve things the way we do. He explains in detail (and layman's terms) how our aesthetics have been formed to interpret the dynamic medium of film and television.
How editing of action from shot to shot creates the illusion of continuous motion. How stagelines work so not to give the effect that your actor is jumping around from one side of the scene to the other. How to crop your shot BETWEEN the bodies natural cut-off points (i.e. neck, elbow, waist) to prevent the actor from looking like a disembodied head or torso.
This book is cover-to-cover insights into what we as viewers take for granted when we watch a good filmmaker's work, but may not consider when faced with the daunting task of mounting a film production and the on-set "reality" problems that dominate the filmmaker's mind when shooting a film.
I first read this book when I was in film school twenty years ago. Since then I have directed many professional film productions and I still review it before starting a new one to refresh myself.
Just as Syd Field's book "Screenplay" is the bible for screenwriting, "Sight Sound Motion" is the bible on understanding what works in film/video and why.

"Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics explains the WHY of film and video production. If you're looking for HOW then turn to another book."
I would disagree with the above review. Only by learning WHY first, can we learn HOW later. This book is more than a cookie cutter approach to film and video. If you want to "click and drag" your way through an editing program, then true, this book is not for you. Add this to your collection if you want a book that teaches how to see and create film. Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics has staying power.

This text thoroughly explains the intricacies of applied media asthetics in a concise and completely accessible way. It is a well organizied text that ehances its presentation through the use of many illustrations. I believe that this is the best text on the subject and that it has been since its first edtion.

Sandra Marton, a best-selling American author, wrote her first novel when she was seven. It was a romance, which probably says a lot about fate and the mysterious paths that sometimes lead us through life. By the time she was ten, she'd read Gone With The Wind even though that famous scene where Rhett carries Scarlett up the stairs puzzled the heck out of her. / Sandra loved school, hated gym, and graduated high school at 15 ½. More important, she fell head over heels in love that same year and finally figured out what that scene in Gone With The Wind was all about. / At university, Sandra studied Creative Writing. She also studied to be an elementary school teacher because everyone knew you couldn't possibly earn your living as a writer. Life got very busy. Sandra married the boy she'd met at 15 ½, began teaching, became a mom, stopped teaching, took in every stray cat and dog she found and eventually ran for public office and won, but she never forgot she had once dreamed of being a writer. In what little spare time she had, she wrote poems and short stories. The poems were dark and murky. The short stories were dark but not quite as murky. She even sold some of them but she knew she hadn't yet found the kind of stories she really wanted to write. / And then, one day, she thought, I wonder if I could write a romance novel⠦ / So she wrote one and sent it into the world where it was rejected in some places and given encouragement in others until her husband, that boy she'd fallen crazy in love with so many years before, took matters into his own hands and mailed her book to Harlequin Presents. / Seventy-five plus books later, he still loves to remind her of that.

Out of the four brothers in the series, Dante and Rafe are my favorite.

Dante may have been an a$$ in the beginning, but he thoroughly redeemed himself in my opinion.

Dante broke up with Gabriela for reasons we don't uncover until later in the book. His initial reason being that their relationship was getting too serious, did seem flighty at first, but by the middle of the book, it stopped being a problem, especially when Gaby calls him out on it.

On a business trip, he meets up with Gaby and discovers that she had given birth to his child. He accepts responsibility and circumstances make him decide to move Gaby back to his apartment in New York and nurses her thru the flu while taking care of the baby. Their relationship (emotional and sexual) rekindles.

Only Sandra Marton can write sex scenes that are both steamy and emotional.

My only complaint, and it goes for all the books in this series, is the ending. Instead of leaving the ending with the couple we've gotten to know and connect with, the epilogues are all precursors for the next book in the series, so I always feel a sort of let down at the end.

Both hero and heroine are likeable and relatable. Dante is strong without needing to treat Gaby like a doormat, though he didn't treat her well in the beginning. Gaby is strong and determined and resourceful and sweet without being wimpy. A very likeable couple.

A good read I highly recommend.

This was a really good book, and I even liked it better than the story of Rafe and Chiara. I love the way the father Cesare sets up his sons and in the end of the book you know Nick and Falco are next. I can't wait to read their story. In this book, it's Dante's turn to get set up by his father Cesare. He sends Dante to Brazil to buy a ranch. The ranch is owned by a girl that Dante used to date in NYC. When she was about to tell him she was pregnant he gave her a pair of diamond earrings and broke up with her. She walked out and didn't bother to take the earrings. Now she's living in Brazil and about to lose her ranch to the bank and some beefy ugly guy when Dante arrives. It's very romantic and I loved the ending. I recommend it highly.

Not as good as usual

I've been in the mood for some HP books i.e. light, entertaining fluff with hunky alpha Hs. I like this author and recently read one of her latest novella's so I thought I'd go back and read some of her older stuff. I'd passed this one over before and I think that was actually the right decision because I just didn't like this H. If you read the other 3 star review by Vanessa Dreamer, then you'll understand what the problem is. The H is truly a jerk who ditches his lover on a whim and doesn't think twice about sleeping his way through loads of women after her. Through the machinations of his father, he finds her in Brasil with his baby, who he never knew about. I really would have liked to see some grovelling and I'd have loved to have seen the h play slightly hard to get. This book truly was disappointing.

This is another of Ms. Neels' highly satisfying stories about the tall handsome mature doctor and the warm, devoted competent Sister that has not any idea of his feelings for her. This time the Sister is tall and striking and dating another doctor. But the hero has been very patient and has been a quietly helpful friend. The book also has all the lovely other Neels ingredients such as lifetime servants who are family, wonderful siblings and companion pets.

Here is a hero I immediately loved

Just when I think I have read the best book EVER by Betty Neels, along comes another one that just knocks my socks off. James Thackery, the hero in this book, was a hero in every sense of the word. Clotidle (Tilly) Collins was a nurse who worked with Dr. Thackery at St. Alma's Hospital. She is engaged to Bruce Johnson, an ambitious young man who hoped to someday be a surgeon and Tilly's father had promised he would buy Bruce a medical practice as a wedding present.

One day while she was at work, Tilly got the devastating news that her parents had been killed in a car crash in France. (Am I the only one who immediately thought of Princess Diana?) Tilly needed to make the journey to the country to the location of her parent's home but Dr. Thackery did not think she was able to drive herself and he called Dr. Bruce Johnson to ask him if he could drive her home. Bruce said that he would be glad to BUT he was scheduled to go to lunch that day with a hospital bigwig who he thought might help him with his career so he would have to decline. Obviously his career was more important to him than being with his fiancée when her parents were killed.

When Dr. Thackery learned that her fiancé would not take her home he said that he would drive her back to her hometown. He also was the one who later went to France to escort the bodies of her parents back to England when Dr. Johnson couldn't go because he once again had a more pressing engagement.

To add to Tilly's misfortunes, she learned that her father had mortgaged their home and when he died the bank immediately started the foreclosure process which meant that besides losing her parents, Tilly is also losing her home. When the good Bruce found out that there would be no practice purchased as a wedding present, and when he further learned that Tilly was now basically homeless and penniless, he told her that he really needed to break his engagement to her and find another girl to marry...one who would be a help to his career. (GOOD RIDANCE!)

Again Dr. Thackery came to the rescue and, unknown by Tilly, he purchased the home so he could give it to her so she would always have a place to visit and perhaps one day, if she left her job at the hospital in London, she could live there.

In order to love a book I really need to love the hero and heroine and I certainly loved both Tilly and James. If they were real people I would love to have them as friends. I think this book is far superior to some books that I have previously given five stars so I wish there was some way I could have given this book more than five stars. I couldn't recommend more highly.

A mountain of loose facts

I think the book is overvalued. It is clear, that the sixth edition is another add of a lot details and unexplained terms without considering the original story line of the book. I hope they rewrite the seventh edition so that is becomes a nice and clean text again in stead of a mountain of facts
