I love Ayn Rand and consider her "Atlas Shrugged" a masterpiece

I love Ayn Rand and consider her "Atlas Shrugged" a masterpiece...well, all but the repetitive radio address at the end... I get what she's trying to say in this earlier attempt, but there are just too many plot holes and logic gaps for me to take "Anthem" seriously. For instance, how could this kid who has been totally taken care of his entire life suddenly just know how to kill a bird (with a rock, on his first try, no less), gut it and cook it? He "discovers" electricity and experiments extensively with it, but knows instinctively how to handle it so it doesn't kill him? Not buyin' that. Her point is valid, but it's too easy to dismiss buried in the bad writing. Still, any true Ayn Rand fan should read all her stuff, not just the best one, even this silly book to get a better, fuller picture of what she was trying to convey in all her writing.

Individualism in "Anthem"

Ayn Rand's thoroughly explains her philosophy regarding a collectivist society in the novel "Anthem". The reader clearly begins to picture what Rand would have thought or said about the role of individualism and ego in a given culture. Subtle things such as the use of "we" in place of "I', or having a number in place of a name demonstrate the carefully-planned collectivist world Ayn Rand has created. The lack of advanced technology and societal norms accurately show the flaws in a totalitarian regime. Yet nearing the end when Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 discover a house in the forest from past societies and begin to read about egos, I feel as though she loses the point of individualism. Ayn Rand expresses through Equality 7-2521 the sanctity of the human ego and how it can withstand any detrimental society. However, ego is not the principle idea of individualism; it is about being self-reliant not self-admiring. He expressed individualistic ideals when he discovered light, questioned his society, and looked within himself for help, not when he planned a perfect race descending from himself. While Ayn Rand perfectly depicts a collectivist society based upon real experiences, her thoughts on individualism lose touch with its fundamental ideas.

Powerful...Provocative...Prescient...

This is vintage Ayn Rand -- a powerful, imaginative, futuristic tale of the driving force of EGO in the Self, and the lack of it. The story personifies the devastating impact of collectivism taken to Socialistic extremes; when nameless beings and all-powerful collectives occupy and control what was once a free state where individual liberty reigned.
But there is hope, for the intense [We-ness] that suffocates, it suffocates itself, too, in the end. And so long as there is still the germ of an "I" to sprout -- to question, to reason, to shatter and then reveal the awful truth of collectivism -- liberty will again shine brightly.
Rand sketches the mechanistic extreme of we-ness in order for us to grasp it fully, and I thank her for that.
This is a fabulous book for monthly book clubs to explore. It will surely provoke intense dialogue but perhaps also confusion for those heretofore clueless about the true meaning liberty vs. collectivism. There has never been a better time to sort out this vital interface.
