I enjoyed the story but it didn't hook me for an exciting ride. It just sort of allowed me to walk through it at a leisurely pace. Good but not great in my opinion.

Wanted to like it but it was awful

I just hate it when a book does not live up to the blurb. I like the idea of a h who wasn't the usual stick thin heroine.
I don't know where you can really go when the opening scenes are all about a hot sexual encounter for the H with some famous stick thin actress and his wife witnesses it.
Apparently the H is just so virile that he can't go without and it's inferred that this is not the first. No apology at anytime through the book about this. In fact he was willing and ready to go straight from the boney actress to the "softer" wife within minutes. Just gross!
There was no sparks between the H and h and you have got to wonder what they see in each other except the so called amazing chemistry. Though the encounter with the actress at the start of the book seemed to have more of this so called "chemistry".
H can't understand why h believed anything bad about him and didn't trust him...ummmm cause you can't keep it in your pants for two minutes after your wife left maybe. And despite the baby I don't understand why the h would just go back to him after witnessing him almost about to take the actress to bed.
The motivations and "love" just didn't make sense or ring true.
Really just a big big disappointment.

It's just a game

I believe this was the second Culture novel (Banks' future history series, for those unfortunates who haven't read this series yet) and about as far from Consider Pheblas as can be. While that book was a grand space opera, taking place right in the middle of a war, featuring a lead character fighting against the culture, this novel is a lot more scaled down. But it's probably better than Consider Pheblas, if only because the mood isn't so downbeat, Banks can be morbidly witty most times but sometimes he goes too far and becomes downright depressing. So, here we have Guergh, probably the greatest game player in the Culture . . . he finds that games really don't hold any excitement for him anymore, and everything in the Culture easy to get (even sex changes!), there's no challenge elsewhere either. Until Contact invites him to go on a mission to a civilization based completely about games. He goes for it and winds up on a place so different from the Culture it might as well be barbaric. From there plots and counterplots start spinning, though this book is delightfully straightforward for the most part, but things are spinning around so fast that you can barely keep your breath. He gets the details right on everything and manages to generate excitement from the series of games that Guergh has to play without going into lengthy details of the rules. The climax is about as surprising as they come, as Guergh gets farther in the games and the stakes get higher as the civilization tries to stop this "outworlder" from making them look like a bunch of idiots. Probably the first SF book you should pick from Banks, both for its relative simplicity (compared to the others) and general lightheartedness. It's not all fun and games but the mood is generally witty and swift. One of those few books you really can't go wrong with if you want a good read.

More Than One Player

The Culture is a galaxy-wide civilization, so far advanced that it has solved most problems that afflict humanity. The great concerns of our time are all resolved. No longer planet-bound, no longer concerned with meeting needs; the Culture is a utopian, decadent paradise. A mix of wildly evolved humans and super-intelligent machines, including intelligent spaceships, it is very nearly all-powerful and omniscient.

But there are still parts of the galaxy, or at least parts of the Magellanic Clouds, where the Culture has not yet gained influence. Those parts of the Galaxy are the business of Contact, the part of the very loose government of the Culture that deals with alien civilizations. And in the difficult cases, Special Circumstances steps in to solve the problem. "Special Circumstances," like most names in Banks' books, is a euphemism: "Special Circumstances" isn't bound by the legal, moral or cultural constraints that bind the rest of the Culture.

Gurgeh, the protagonist, is recruited, perhaps blackmailed, by Special Circumstances to help Contact with an awkwardly difficult alien culture. The Azadians present a space-faring civilization, less advanced than the Culture but still powerful, whose entire ethos is based on The Game. Social position, military rank, governmental power, wealth; all of Azad is based on one's performance in The Game. Gurgeh is one of the Culture's best games players. Special Circumstances sends Gurgeh to Azad to compete in The Game.

At one level, Banks is writing about the effect of an advanced culture on a less advanced one. At another, he is having fun with a traditional space opera culture that is in contact with his more subtle and sophisticated one. At another, he is poking fun at traditional SF authors. Because as the story progresses, the underbelly of Azad is revealed to be disgusting and horrific; in some ways, the Culture's efforts to undermine Azad are morally justified.

But most of what Contact tells Gurgeh is a lie. He himself is an unknowing pawn in another game. When is it right to cheat? What is cheating? As ever, Banks asks the questions but doesn't really answer them, making you ask yourself instead, "Am I asking the right question?"

Banks' Culture is ironic and self-mocking. The intelligent ship that takes Gurgeh to Azad is the size of an asteroid but calls itself "Little Rascal." The equally vast ship that takes him back is named "So Much for Subtlety." But the Culture is deadly, too, as evidenced in _Consider Phlebas_, set a few hundred years earlier than _Player of Games_. The Culture is peaceful and principled; that doesn't mean non-violent or honest.

This is a very good book by a very good author. Banks never tells the same story twice, and in _Player of Games_ he sets a new benchmark for intelligent science fiction. Highly recommended.

A Near Perfect Book

I say "near perfect" because as those who've read a lot of Ian Banks know, Banks is somewhat obsessed with cruelty and torture and this book has its fair share. At least here, however, it forms a logical and integral part of the book unlike Banks' Consider Phlebas, where it's so gratuitous and specific that it's really disturbing, and it doesn't form a huge part of the book like it does in The Wasp Factory, which I couldn't finish because of it.
The above aside, the story is compelling, the writing superb, and the author's premise intelligent without being condescending or dense. Banks has created a version of Utopia, called the Culture, and thought it through quite well. Ownership and status have been eliminated, there's plenty of space, there's equality (even sentient machines share the same status as humans), people can internally create whatever drugs/state of mind they need/want and even select their gender, and people are happy and engaged. So when Jernau Gergeh, a professional game player, is recruited to play the game of Azad in the far-distant empire of Azad, he is reluctant to leave his home for the five years the game will take. But Gurgeh does leave, and Azad turns out to be a civilization much more like our own than that of the Culture. Azad is hierarchical, crowded and violent, and status is everything.
One of the interesting things that Banks has done is to make us recognize ourselves in the empire of Azad, while still finding ways to make the Azadians different than the alien races one so often finds in mediocre science fiction writing. For one thing, the Azadians have three genders. Banks also focuses on the difference between the languages of the Culture and the empire, and how language may shape thought. Banks makes us understand why Gurgeh becomes attracted to the empire even with all its flaws, inequalities and cruelty, and to the game of Azad, a brilliantly created giant of a game which is central to the civilization of Azad and all its institutions, and which represents the entire philosophy of the empire.
You might not think that a book about a game and game-playing would be consistently compelling, but in Bank's capable hands it is. A study of competition, cultural differences, politics and human nature, it stays captivating throughout, managing to combine a good story and excellent story telling with thought- provoking premises. This was the first book by Banks I ever read and easily my favorite still. I've read it at least half a dozen times and it holds up on every re-reading.

It reveals that home schooling is not a random collection of individuals but an elaborate social movement with its own celebrities, networks, and characteristic lifeways. Profound insights into modern humanity and home schoolers

Home education is such a remarkable modern movement that it has long deserved close scrutiny by serious social scientists. Mitchell Stevens has given the American home school movement a long and careful look. For almost a decade (from 1990 to 1989), this dedicated sociologist met with home schoolers singly and in groups. This book will be "must" reading for home school leaders of every persuausion, including those who are openly uncomfortable with the concept of "home school leaders."
As a sociologist, Dr. Stevens is interested in how home schoolers went about constructing an entirely new set of organizational structures. He delves deeply into the differing "schema" of the differing wings of the home school movement, and explores how different paradigms affect developing institutions. He notes the details ("inclusive" home school groups arrange chairs in circles for highly democratic meetings, while "Christian" home school groups routinely sit in pews while their "leaders" address them from pulpits), and then draws broad but credible conclusions from them.
As a home schooler who has been in "leadership" in Christian home schooling since 1986, I was impressed at the depth and thoughtfulness of this book. While I may disagree with him on certain points, this is a book that no thoughtful home schooler will be able to ignore. Although I am deeply committed to a united home school movement, Dr. Stevens has spelled out the specifics of how that movement is divided at present, and the deeper reasons of why it has grown apart. The challenge to home schoolers who want to bridge those divisions is now clear. The solutions are not.
Opponents of home schooling will find little to love in this book. While it is painfully honest about the differences between modern home schoolers, it concludes with some breathtaking observations on modern womanhood, modern childhood, and modern society. In his final chapter, "Nurturing the Expanded Self," Dr. Stevens argues that home schooling is a movement that finally deals with the "reproductive costs of the expanded self." The "expanded self" he refers to is the truly developed individual, who from childhood has been raised to explore his or her own unique capacities. By breaking out of the assembly-line institutions of modern "schooling," home educators have opened up a world of post-modern possibilities. Home schoolers have been willing to pay the cost of this investment: a full-time parent, most often the mother, who is willing to lay down her life for her child's abundant life. Stevens says:
"The logic of contemporary individualism presents all contemporary mothers, feminist or not, with a deep dilemma. On the one hand, conventional wisdom now encourages women to be cautious about family encroachments on the integrity of their own identities. Making too many sacrifices for husbands and children is regarded as problematic for women's own self-development and psychic health. On the other hand, contemporary assumptions about the nature of childhood oblige parents to invest ever more maternal labor in their children. At the same time that women AS WOMEN have learned to be more defensive about their own needs, then they also have faced increasing demands AS MOTHERS to honor their children's individual needs."
Stevens uses the data of the modern home school movement to ask and answer big questions about the way that people organize their lives, their families, and their communities. Hundreds of thousands of serious home schoolers will become wiser and more effective by reading this book. Those who are not home schooling - yet - may want to follow their example.

Interesting but Misses 3rd Type of Homeschoolers

Dr. Stevens' book is a fascinating look at the contrasts between conservative Protestants who homeschool for religious reasons and secular "unschoolers". He does an excellent job discussing how these differing motivations affect how individual families educate their children and also how they affect organizations providing support to and advocacy for homeschoolers.

The major criticism I have of Dr. Stevens' work is that he completely missed the third type of homeschoolers: those who homeschool for academic reasons. Folks like me who aren't looking to Mary Pride or John Holt for inspiration but to authors like Susan Wise Bauer and Mortimer J. Adler. Our problem with traditional schools isn't that we think they're "ungodly" or not crunchy enough but rather that they've been "dumbed down" in recent years. We want rigorous math; explicit teaching of phonics, spelling rules, and grammar; classical languages like Latin and/or Greek; studying the history and literature of our Western Civilization heritage; and so on. There are lots of us out there in the homeschool community- why are we nowhere to be seen in Dr. Stevens' book?

First high quality analysis of the home schooling movement

Mitchell Stevens provides the first in depth study of the American home schooling movement. Instead of assuming that home schoolers are right wing fanatics or left wing bohemians, he takes the time to attend their meetings, visit their homes and read their literature. From his in depth study, he concludes that home schooling is an activity that grows out of long traditions in American politics and is an honest, and possibly successful, attempt at reconstructing education so that it meets the needs of children.
The focus of Mitchell's book is the division between home schoolers who view home schooling as a form of Christian education and those who view home schooling as a secular activity. Mitchell's thesis is that this division defines much of the discourse, organization and politics of home schooling. It also reflects concepts of womanhood, childhood and family.
From a sociological perspective, I think that this book's biggest contributions is an implicit critique of some themes in the sociology of education, where schools are seen as propagators of the status quo. Here, we have an example of how an institution, public education, is relaxing its grip and new forms of education are being created. This is not to say that public education is on the path to extinction, but this book shows how viables alternatives to dominant institutions emerge.
To summarize: first in depth sociological work on home schooling, takes home schoolers seriously as people, clear
writing and very little jargon and furthers our understanding of educational institutions and social change. A sure winner!
